Vue Privée invited five contemporary artists to put their own spin on these 19th century images from the Techinicolour Japan exhibition. Coming from distinctively different backgrounds and practices; Justin Lee, Jamie Paul, Craig Redman, Steve Lawler and Fleecircus each choose one photograph as his or her inspiration for the new work. The resulting remixes are surprising and sometimes challenging.
Fleecircus, aka Lee Wai Leng, is an illustrator based in Singapore. After graduating from LASALLE College of the Arts, she began experimenting and developing her own illustration style. Her illustrations are a combination of style ranging from intricate vectors to back-to-basics pencil sketching. From 2000 to 2009, Fleecircus illustrations have been commissioned by MTV Asia, L'oreal, Pictoplasma(Berlin), Zouk, Funkstörung(Germany), Anna Sui Perfume, Levis and Gryphon Tea.
Fleecircus collaborations include Singapore Design Festival 20/20. Her works were selected as one of the 20 artists to be featured at the Singapore and London Design Festival in 2007. Fleecircus has collaborated with Moleskine on several exhibitions that toured around Asia Pacific. She completed her stint as the creative consultant under Black Design as Creative Director for the Singapore Peranakan Museum in early 2008. She was invited in the same year to create a limited make-up collection for L'oreal to raise awareness for Action For Aids campaign. In 2009, she was picked by Gryphon Tea to collaborate in a limited tea artisan collection.
